Summo'tyme Guide to the Lakes

With summer time closing in on us, a review of fifty or so different (semi) local lakes just might be a useful and helpful entry on this site. Carefully examining each lake and dispelling information that the readers of this blog might find useful. For instance, that information might include driving directions, best times to visit, water temperature, the closest you can park without having to pay and just about anything else one might want to know about a certain lake. This is not that article.

Instead of telling you good hard facts about different lakes, the aim here is to tell you about two favorite lakes; Folsom Lake and Lake Berryessa. These are favorites for their locality and abundant supply of water centric entertainment. Since most of this blogs readers are not local to California state, there is no point in getting to specific with details.

Remember that when the air is warm, the water is usually cool. After a few weeks of blistering heat a trip to the lake is always in order. The lake is not just for cooling off however, a day at the lake can provide much more enjoyment and reprieve from the heat then a simple dip! So this summer when you've had enough of the heat, enough of the air conditioning and just want to spend some time in the sun or even under an umbrella outside then head for a local lake. There are plenty of activities to keep the entire family, clan, or gang happy.

Besides having an enormous body of water, Folsom Lake has some of the best beginner to intermediate mountain biking within the greater Sacramento Area. Unlike most county parks that follow the river, you can actually ride your bike on the dirt here. When things start getting blurry and your face flush with heat head strait for the water. There are also a couple sand volleyball courts and nets for anyone to use. Be careful though, on a busy day you might have to get their pretty early to get a court to yourself.

Besides being another enormous body of water, Lake Berryessa has some of the prettiest scenery around. Located just west of Winters and just East of Calistoga, the drive to the lake is beautiful. When its evening time, go take a short drive through the beautiful parts of Napa County and catch a sunset over a vineyard.

Now comes the highly anticipated informative section of this article: Equip yourself before heading out. Some of the best purchases made have been around the $10 range. Bring a Frisbee, bring food, bring sunscreen, bring a cheap floaty (technical term) and bring some friends. You can only spend so much time in the actual water, but you can have just as much fun outside the water whilst also squeezing in some exercise in the name of fun. Both the dreaded Wal-Mart and much more liked Target stores offer a large variety of cheap 'toys' that will turn any boring weekend into a great lake get-a-way. So get out there and have some fun at a local lake. Do keep in mind that alcohol and glass bottles are not allowed at most lakes. So, if your drinking, "flask it", and don't get too stupid, remember to stay hydrated with H2O!
